Different Types of Bikini Waxes

With summer around the corner, you may be starting to think about the different swimsuits and bikini styles you are going to opt for and, of course, the type of bikini wax style you want.

While shaving may be considered a faster method of hair removal, waxing ensures long-lasting smoothness for up to 28 days without the risk of cuts and discomfort in such a sensitive area. Waxing can also be an excellent method to ensure certain areas such as your bikini line are neat and shaped exactly how you want them.

If you have never had a bikini wax, you may be uncertain about what different bikini waxes are available. There are many different types of bikini wax, and ultimately what style you go for is completely due to personal taste.

While there are certain styles, such as the ‘French’, ‘Brazilian’ and ‘Hollywood’, which we recommend should be left to the professionals, there are others which can be mastered at home.*

Ultimately two main factors determine the difference between bikini waxing styles;

  1. How much hair is to be removed
  2. Where the remaining hair is located

Have a look at this handy guide to help you decipher those salon menu cards, or to give you some ideas for types of bikini waxes to try at home with a little help from Veet®!

American Wax (Bikini)

This is considered a standard, or more basic, type of bikini wax. This is simply a ‘tidy up’ that removes any hair that could be seen while wearing a bikini or a swim suit – so from the upper thighs and just outside the panty line, and also from the top that might peek over the waistband.

 Extended Bikini

Full Bikini Line Wax (Extended Bikini)

This removes all of the hair that would be taken off with the standard bikini, but takes it deeper around the legs, and may shape it into more of a triangle by taking more off of the top. This type of waxing is good for those who want to keep some hair down there, but want it to look neat and tidy.

 French Wax

French Wax*

If you feel that the above methods do not remove the amount of hair you want, you may want to consider the French wax. However, we recommend that you leave the French Wax to a professional. This method takes all the hair from the front, including the more intimate areas, leaving just a ‘landing strip’ on top. This wax doesn’t touch the areas behind, so is perfect for those looking to be smooth up front, without removing any hair from the back.

 Brazilian Wax

Brazilian Wax*

A popular option on most salon menus and another type of bikini wax that we recommend you to leave to a professional is the Brazilian wax. Although it is very similar to the French Wax in that it removes most of the hair from the front, leaving a small strip or triangle, this also takes all the hair off the back. This is the perfect style for those wearing a thong bikini, as no hair will be visible front or back.

Brazilian hair removal is a popular choice when it comes to styling and bikini waxing. There are multiple types of Brazilian wax, and you may come across names such as “The Bermuda Triangle” (an upside-down triangle), and the “The Desert Island” - which leaves just a small amount of hair for anyone who does not want to be completely hair free - but they all remove hair from the same areas.

Hollywood Wax*

If you are feeling daring enough for this look, we definitely recommend that you leave it to a professional. The Hollywood bikini wax is just about as far as you can go with bikini waxing, and is the style to go for if you don’t want any hair left down there at all. It completely removes hair from both the front and back.

Bikini Waxing at Home

While styles such as the French, Brazilian and Hollywood should be left to professionals, as they deal with some very sensitive areas, the less extreme styles can be achieved with great effect at home. Veet® Botanic Inspirations® Wax Strip Kit is perfect for tidying up that area. If you have not waxed before, we recommend starting by removing hair from the legs first.  Only when you have experience, then progress to the sensitive areas of the underarm and bikini line.

With Veet® Botanic Inspirations® Wax Strip Kit, warm the strips between your hands until the wax feels warm. Then, apply the strip to the desired area repeatedly rubbing in direction of hair growth.  Hold the Veet Easy Grip™ tab and pull the strip back on itself in one swift motion in the opposite direction of hair growth taking the hair with it.

How to Prepare For Waxing

While other methods of hair removal may not require much regarding preparation, you are going to want to spend a little more time when it comes to at-home waxing.

You do not have to do much in order to prepare for a wax. One of the most important things to always ensure, no matter which of the different bikini wax styles you choose, is that the area you are going to wax is clean and dry. After you have been in the shower, make sure you have thoroughly dried the area.

The Waxing Process

When you are completely ready to begin, apply the wax strips following the below instructions.

  1. Take out a double wax strip and rub between your hands to make the strip easy to separate.
  2. Carefully peel the strips apart using the rounded easy grip tabs.
  3. With the easy grip tab at the bottom, apply one strip to the skin.  Rub several times in the direction your hair grows to make sure the wax adheres well.
  4. Hold your skin taut.  Grasp the tab, and pull the strip back on itself as quickly as you can, against the direction the hair grows.  Pull the strip back in one swift motion, close to the skin rather than away from it.
  5. After waxing, clean away any wax left on your skin with a perfect finish wipe.

Remember to always follow the instructions on the packaging and test a discreet area at least 24 hours beforehand to avoid any skin reaction. Tip: Do not wax over the same area more than once.

Waxing After-Care

There are a few after care options you may want to consider if you are waxing at home in order to maintain beautifully smooth skin and avoid irritation or ingrown hairs. Read “Skin Care Tips for After You Wax” for more guidance on waxing after care techniques.
